Elaine's Kitchen

ROUND 1
Starting the projects working in teams of two we met with members of the Over The Rhine community and designed a grilling station that captured what they though was important..
Having Lived in Over-The-Rhine for over 50 years, Georgia is exceedingly familiar with the area. Since she moved there, she has been a facet in the community with a long career in the Cincinnati Public School System, and a known face in her block club. Georgia is passionate about her community and her large family, and loves listening to music such as Gospel and R&B. Ultimately, she would like for the grill station to be mobile so that people could borrow it for causes located outside of Findlay Market, and for it to be highly durable.

ROUND 2
The second iteration of the project was done in groups of five. Taking the winning attributes of the group members previous iterations we designed grilling station that housed the satellite grills when the grilling season was over and the space could become counter sitting during the summer season. Each satellite grill had a shell that could be used as prep space when the grill was in use and paired with another grill and used as a table when not in use.
This and two other proposals were reviewed by the board members of Findlay Market where they chose our groups design to move forward with towards a final design,
THE FINAL DESIGN
The final design as we build it did change quite a bit from the previous iteration in attempts to capture both the vibrance and history of Findlay Market.
THE BUILD
The laser cut 14 ga. steel screens each depicts a figure ground design of a view unique to Findlay market. Designs and cutting files were one of my personal responsibilities.
One of my largest contributions to the construction phase of the project was the making of the concrete counter-tops. The process, including all mold making materials, cost far less than any exterior rated, prefabricated counter-top.
Lead by myself and another student, our studio build custom molds for each section of counter-top. We then used a concrete mix that was meant for counter-tops and once cured used angle grinders with special grinding cups to polish the surfaces before sealing them with a formula that is safe for food prep and exterior use.
